1 Minute Film: Practical

It is important to consider continuity editing when shooting a film and in order to create a strong sense of time and place, we decided to shoot the film at night so that the lighting would stay consistent throughout the shoot. Due to the fact that we were only given a minute, we decided that it would be best to film on just one location. We found this enabled us to create a stronger sense of narrative within a short amount of time.

The equipment we used was a DSLR Camera, a Zoom H4N and 2 studio lights. Our group only consists of 2 people, Me and Claire, so this put us in a position where we had multiple roles within the filming. Claire focussed on working with the camera and I would prompt her with the shots for each take referring to the storyboard. We worked together with the lighting, Claire would direct me as to where I should place the light regarding angles and distance in order to obtain a consistent atmosphere. On each take I would use the clapper board to ensure that the sound and visual synced up. I took charge of the sound aspect, using earphones to ensure that the quality of sound was good and that we were capturing right sound. As the supplier of the storyboard and script, I also informed our 2 actors, Rosie and Anna of what was happening throughout the shoot and what they had to do and say, making sure they were confident with their characters and the progression of the narrative.

Once we had finished, we made sure all shots and audio files were saved and proceeded to back up the SD cards on the computer. In class we were briefed with the basics of the Adobe Premier video editing software. Me and Claire then proceeded to upload the chosen footage and audio onto the software, cutting down and changing the order of the footage. We also had to make sure all sound and footage were synced up which was a tedious task but extremely rewarding by the end.

Things we done well:
  • Sound
  • Shot angles
  • Storyboard
  • Script
  • Editing
  • Sound
  • Application of Narrative
Things we could improve:
  • Consistency of lighting
  • Background props
  • Timing - we ran over the 1 minute bracket
